The Case of the Missing Phone

Alex and his friend Zara were walking home from school one Friday afternoon. They talked about the weekend, homework, and the school play. When they reached the corner by the park, Alex realized something was wrong.

“My phone is gone,” he said, patting his pockets.
“You had it at lunch,” Zara reminded him. “Where did you last use it?”

They retraced Alex’s steps:
• the cafeteria
• the library
• the bike racks

At the bike racks, they saw a small crowd around a boy they didn’t know. Someone was filming him on his phone.

“That looks like my phone,” Alex whispered.

Zara walked up and politely asked, “Is that your phone?”
The boy froze. “Uh—no…” he said, trying to walk away.

Instead of getting angry, Alex stayed calm. “Please give it back. It’s mine.”

The boy hesitated, then handed the phone over. “I found it,” he said. “I didn’t mean trouble.”
Alex checked his lock screen. It was his phone.

Zara added, “If you found it, you could have just told us. We were worried.”
The boy looked ashamed. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

Alex didn’t call the police. Instead, he suggested the boy walk them to the library to show where he found it. The boy apologized again, explained that he was curious and didn’t know what to do, and promised he wouldn’t take things that weren’t his.

As they walked away, Alex said, “If someone finds something lost, telling the owner is always the right thing to do.”
